Dr. Todd Schmit
Title: Associate Professor
Faculty Director, Cooperative Enterprise Program
Faculty Director, Agribusiness and Rural Development Program
Todd Schmit's research and extension interests focus on improving agribusiness firm management skills that lead to improved decision making, firm performance, and industry viability. The majority of his applied research and extension programming considers how a better understanding of firm behavior and market conditions leads to more effective agricultural industry development policies. The importance of localized inter-industry linkages and spatial characteristics (market, physical, and sociodemographic) are explicitly considered to better understand the efficacy of place-based development policies and why more general policies can lead to differential outcomes at local levels. Particular areas of emphasis include cooperative business management, local and regional food systems performance, economic impact analysis, and rural economic development.
